Special Report: GarageBand Jam Pack 4 Analysis

Now that Jam Pack 4: Symphony Orchestra is shipping, you may be wondering what, exactly, you are purchasing. iCompositions has spent countless hours auditing the contents of the lastest expansion for GarageBand from Apple and has condensed the list of loops into an easy-to-read summary. Also, at the request of our readers, we've compiled a list of all software instruments included in Jam Pack 4.

Similar to our findings in our Analysis of Jam Pack 3, we discovered that Apple has again significantly under-valued Jam Pack 4. While they advertise "over 2000 prerecorded loops", the actual package contains 2203 loops, just over 10% more than they tell you.

First Look
There are several interesting things about this Jam Pack which make it different from its predecessors.

First, loops are not installed in the same place as Jam Pack 1, 2, and 3: Macintosh HD > Library > GarageBand > Apple Loops. They're actually alone in Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > Apple Loops > Apple. We're not entirely sure what the significance of this change is but it likely has something to do with changing architecture of GarageBand 2.

Next, in our full listing of the loops, we found the number of unique loop names in the entire listing (not including the number attached to the end). I was shocked to find that "Classical Piano Right" has a jaw-dropping 128 variations. That's right, 128 loops carry the name "Classical Piano Right".

Finally, an iCompositions user discovered the hard way that Jam Pack 4 cannot be installed on previous versions of GarageBand. Only the latest version, GarageBand 2, can support it (possibly due to the changing architecture we mentioned in the first point).

As for the loops, eeek, why are there so many with just 1 loop, it looks terrible, well as far as I have heard of the software instruments over on the Apple Jam Packs website with the demo songs (this time classical pieces of course) I'm glad I have Garritan Personal Orchestra, it sound's much better, plus it's about to get a upgrade to version 2, yes it costs over double Jam Pack 4 does, but still glad I got this instead. I was thinking about geting JP4 at some point anyway, but I don't think I'll bother now. QB Artist	In GB2, when you add an instrument, you can limit display of available instruments to a specific source. It's a pulldown list that says "Show All" by default. On earlier Jam Packs you could make a folder called Apple Loops on the external drive, then open Grageband and it would ask where they are located. finer Artist	Not sure if anyone has mentioned this already but Jam Pack 4 needs a minimum of 512 MB of RAM (1GB recommended), which I discovered AFTER I had bought it today (I only have 256 so have had to buy more!). This is something people need to consider before buying it. The reason is that the demand for a lot of tracks is required here, because in this style of writing, there are typically a lot of different instruments involved. Where as a Rock Ensemble for example may only have five or six tracks, an orchestration can require many more, especially if you separate out individual string parts. The instrument samples were of the most interest to me, and I was pleases that they have included all and even more than I expected of the standard instruments that are used in symphonic orchestration. It is all there. Finally. I was dissapointed when I first got going with Garage Band because none of the instruments in the orchestra (ie: oboe, clarinet, basson, tuba to name a few) were there. This Jam Pack fills the void and the samples are mostly decent to my tastes. I think that the brass is te best sounding out of them all, and the horns are very rich and full. They also did a good job with the trumpet samples, and it is hard to come by a good trumpet sound I have found. I typically sample all of my winds and brass from my synth, an Alesis QS6. Nothing new and nothing too expensive, but certainly good when it comes to wood wind samples, in my opinion anyway. For this reason, I was not too impressed with the Oboe or Bassoon samples that came in Jam Pack 4. They are ok, and with the right manual adjustments can be made better sounding, but they just don't have much color or character to them. I believe that it is overtones present in a sample, that give it these qualities. Perhaps my samples that I have been using have more overtones, and thus sound more real to me that the Garage Band versions. Like I said though, work and adjustment can help this out, and I have not had time to try any of this out yet. Again though, the brass had my synth sounds beat. But Alesis has been said to have better woodwind than brass or string samples. I agree with this theory. As far as strings are concerned, I still love to use "hollywood strings" by Garage Band. So clean and forgiving when it comes to volume levels. Part of the original Garage Band package, I use them all the time. They also did a good job with the trumpet samples, and it is hard to come by a good trumpet sound I have found. I typically sample all of my winds and brass from my synth, an Alesis QS6. Nothing new and nothing too expensive, but certainly good when it comes to wood wind samples, in my opinion anyway. For this reason, I was not too impressed with the Oboe or Bassoon samples that came in Jam Pack 4. They are ok, and with the right manual adjustments can be made better sounding, but they just don't have much color or character to them. I believe that it is overtones present in a sample, that give it these qualities. Perhaps my samples that I have been using have more overtones, and thus sound more real to me that the Garage Band versions. Like I said though, work and adjustment can help this out, and I have not had time to try any of this out yet. Again though, the brass had my synth sounds beat. But Alesis has been said to have better woodwind than brass or string samples. I agree with this theory. As far as strings are concerned, I still love to use "hollywood strings" by Garage Band. So clean and forgiving when it comes to volume levels. Part of the original Garage Band package, I use them all the time. Good Job all in all to Apple for their work in the release of the Jam Pack 4 for Garage Band!!! SIncerely, MidiMacMan.
